War in Ukraine: Big Attack on Kyiv Hurts Many People

On Tuesday, Russia attacked Kyiv with drones and missiles.

Kyiv is the capital city of Ukraine. It’s prounounced KEE-eve; it rhymes with leave.

Ukraine says Russia sent 440 drones and 32 missiles to attack them.

Russia says it was trying to hit military buildings near Kyiv. They ended up hurting regular people.

Rescue workers say that 21 people have died and more than 130 were hurt.

Most of the people who died were inside a tall apartment building that was hit and badly damaged.

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said it was one of the worst attacks since the war started three years ago.

The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for more than three years. Other countries, like the United States, have tried to help stop the fighting, but so far, Russia and Ukraine can’t agree on how to do that.

Russia says it will stop attacking Ukraine if it gives Russia some of its land, reduce the size of their army, stop working with Western countries, and change their government to be more friendly to Russia.

Ukraine wants peace, but doesn’t want to accept Russia’s unfair demands. Many Ukrainians believe that giving in to Russia’s demands would reward them for waging war, and encourage them to do it again in the future.
